Due to delays with finalising resource consent for the new Albany Senior High School, the Ministry of Education was required to construct an interim school for the first roll intake of 2009, prior to the new school opening in 2010.
The brief was challenging in that this school needed to be designed, consented and constructed all within 9 months.
The school was also to incorporate a new “learning common” teaching philosophy and although the facility was only to be in operation for one school year, quality was essential to ensure that the enrolment for the new school was high and all aspects of the school’s curriculum could be included.
Greenstone Group’s initial involvement was to conceptualise and put in place a delivery plan and structure which would have the facility completed before 2009. Following acceptance of the plan, Greenstone Group were appointed as Project Managers, and additionally commissioned to manage the appointment of consultants, the design process including liaison with the school senior management team, tendering and construction.
Unique to the school is the modular nature of the buildings. This enabled the design and construction to be fast tracked and also allows the school to be relocated once the permanent Albany Senior High School is complete.
Although classed as temporary the learning environment provided by the facility has been extremely successful for Albany Senior High School and the Ministry of Education. The facility has already been viewed as a model to meet on-going school and Ministry of Education requirements.
The interim campus was successfully handed over to the Principal in December 2008 on time and 7% under budget.
